Press release from U.S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Land Management; Sept. 18, 2023

Volunteer opportunity for National Public Lands Day

CRAIG, Colo. —The Bureau of Land Management, Routt County Riders, and Steamboat Adaptive Recreational Sports (STARS) invite volunteers to a National Public Lands Day event at the Rotary Trailhead on September 23 near Steamboat Springs.

The trailhead is on public land within the Emerald Mountain Special Recreation Area, which is managed for mountain biking, hiking, and horseback riding. Goals of the event are to improve accessibility for all riders on the Rotary Trail.

“This is a great opportunity to get out and meet some new folks while completing trail work that will benefit all users including those using adaptive sports equipment to enjoy Emerald Mountain” said Kymm Gresset, Little Snake Field Manager.

“Our goal is to help users who need wider trails to navigate with assisted modes of transportation. This work will ensure that everyone can use these trails regardless of their circumstances,” said BLM Park Ranger, Mark Kohn.

Interested volunteers should pre-register at https://forms.gle/qec3AURL6g3P9WE69 by September 22 and meet at 8:30 a.m. on September 23 at the Rotary Trailhead, approximately 10 miles west of Steamboat Springs. Volunteers will be working to preserve and widen areas around the Rotary Trailhead.

Work should be complete by 12:30 p.m. and participants should bring eye protection and work gloves. Boots, long pants, and a long-sleeved shirt are recommended. Lunch will be provided by Routt County Riders, but volunteers need to provide their own water/beverages.

Directions: From downtown Steamboat Springs, head west on Lincoln Ave. Turn left on 13th (Routt County Road 33). Continue on Co. Rd 33 for about five miles. Turn left onto Co. Rd 45. Follow Co. Rd 45 for approximately one mile to the parking area on the left.

National Public Lands Day is the largest single-day volunteer effort for public lands. With 8.3 million acres of BLM-managed public land in Colorado, volunteers are vital to accomplish many important projects. In 2019, over 800 volunteers contributed approximately 5,000 hours of work to BLM Colorado.
