An all-school assembly at Steamboat Springs High School Wednesday, focused on anti-Semitism, discrimination and bullying. The assembly was called due to recent vandalism with swastikas in the community.

Steamboat Springs Police Chief Mark Beckett spoke, as did Rabbi Kolby Morris-Dahary about the dangers of anti-Semitism.

The last speaker was Gerry Verdoner, who is a Spanish teacher at the high school. He shared his emotional Jewish history to the students.

“As a member of Steamboat’s Jewish community, and a child of a Holocaust survivor and having family members who also perished during the war, and family lineage that has been persecuted back to Spain 500 years ago, being able to share my truth and my light with the students in Steamboat and hopefully be able to share their light with the world is just an awesome opportunity.”

Principal Jay Hamric said the anti-Semitism assembly was serious and significant. He said the school should be a place that feels like home, with a sense of family, inclusion, and belonging.

You can read some of those speeches at the assembly on our website —

Rock work continues along Hwy 40 in Mount Harris Canyon. Colorado Department of Transportation is removing loose rock so it doesn’t fall on Hwy 40, and they are putting in a rockfall attenuator fence. Expect short delays.

Close to 400 5th graders from Moffat and Routt counties learned about water Wednesday, at the 2nd Annual Yampa Youth Water Festival at the fairgrounds in Hayden. It was organized by Holly Kirkpatrick with the Upper Yampa Water Conservancy District. She says the kids went to 22 stations to learn all about water in the Yampa Valley.

“Endangered fish that live in the Yampa River, to how we use water and distribute those across our communities. We have the Town of Hayden Public Works here explaining how they distribute water. We have the City of Steamboat Springs talking to students about how to keep the Yampa Clean.”

Kirkpatrick wants the kids to learn about the different aspects of water so that maybe they’ll choose one as a career path one day.
