“You plant bulbs in the fall so that they get vernalization which is the chilling period. They sit underneath a blanket of snow all winter and they pop up when the snow melts for a nice lovely colorful surprise in the spring.”

The flower bulbs are all from the Netherlands. Garlic bulbs are also available.

The display is in the back of the Botanic Park, at the offices in the Trillium House. Hours are 2-4 p.m. Thursday, and then 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

And remember, when you are making your purchases, moose love tulips.

Yampa River Botanic Park Hosts Annual Fall Bulb Benefit

Beautify Next Year’s Garden with Unique and Remarkable Bulbs and Peonies

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-October 5, 2023-Fall is the perfect time of year to plant bulbs that will send up beautiful blooms next spring. Although fall is taking hold across the Yampa Valley, the annual Fall Bulb & Peony Benefit is set to bloom this week.

The annual event, hosted by the Yampa River Botanic Park, will take place on October 5-7 at the Trillium House, located inside the park. The benefit will feature a hand-picked selection of unique and remarkable bulbs that thrive in the Yampa River Valley. The selection of bulbs was chosen for their form, color, fragrance, and hardiness, many of which you can’t typically find locally.

Varieties of daffodils, tulips, allium, fritillaria, fall blooming crocus, colchicum, peonies, garlic, and more promise to dazzle and delight. Bulbs for forcing including paperwhites, hyacinths, and amaryllis will also be available and make great holiday decorations and gifts.

Routt County Master Gardeners and Yampa River Botanic Park staff will be on hand to answer questions and offer suggestions for successful planting.

Members Only hours are October 5 from 10 am to 2 pm. The public is welcome to shop October 5 from 2 pm to 4 pm and October 6-7 from 10 am to 2 pm. Come early, the benefit sold out in record time last year.

Once a sprawling horse pasture, the six-acre Yampa River Botanic Park is now home to more than 60 unique gardens, thousands of plant species, animals, and hosts special events of all shapes and sizes. An innovative experiment in private/public partnerships, the Botanic Park is free and open to the public from dawn to dusk, through October 31.
