We have spoken to the corporate office of the U.S. Postal Service out of Denver. Spokesperson James Boxrud assures us that things are happening and they are making progress on determining who has to pay for a P.O. Box when they may have no other way of getting their mail, in Steamboat Springs and Routt County. He says forms should soon be sent out to those people to verify that information. And he even spoke of some residents eventually getting two years of a refund for having to pay when they should not have had to. They’ve promised that we’ll be the first to know, and we promise to keep you updated.
The Community Ag Alliance has purchased a new building for the market and local food store. It’s at 35 11th Street, next to Primrose. It doubles the space and adds more freezer and refrigerator storage. The Ag Alliance is also raising money to help pay for the expansion and renovations which they hope to have finished by early next year so they can move in.
Snowplow drivers are ready for a long winter ahead. Routt County Road and Bridge has 160 miles of paved roads to plow, 500 miles of graveled roads, and 106 bridges. The department is fully staffed for the winter with 32 operators maintaining the roads in three county districts.
One person who WON’T be driving a snow plow this year is Leonard Auter. He has retired after 42 years of being a snowplow driver and heavy equipment operator for the Routt County Road and Bridge Department.
“I’m going to miss my route a little bit and all of the people that I met on my route. I’m still friends with a lot of them. I’m going to miss some of that but I’m not going to miss the two o’clock in the morning call and the weekend being on call.”
Auter said he tried to be fair to all of the residents on his route.
“I’d always try to be fair to everybody and I would think ‘How would I want my road to look like after it was plowed?’ What could I handle and I just tried to be fair with everybody. I wouldn’t plow anybody in on purpose. I was just doing my job.
Auter said that this winter, he is going to sit around and relax, listen to his favorite Steamboat Radio stations, and just “watch it snow.”
