The Moffat County School District will interview three candidates for the job of Interim Superintendent of the school district Wednesday afternoon. They are:
- Former Steamboat Springs School District Superintendent Brad Meeks
- Jim Hattabaugh who is from Arkansas, and most recently a superintendent at the Dulce Independent School District in New Mexico, which is on the Jicarilla Apache Indian Reservation
- Troy Damman who is the current superintendent in the Erie/Galesburg, Kansas School District
Craig Police is recognizing some of its employees. The honors happened at their Christmas party over the weekend. From Craig Police Chief Mike Cochran:
- Officer of the Year – Officer Daniel Molina – Daniel started with the Craig Police Department as a recruit in the Flat Rock Police Academy in January of 2022.
- Supervisor of the Year – Sergeant Brian Soper – Brian started with the Craig Police Department in May of 1998. He left the police department May of 2019 for a job with Colowyo Mine When he left he was a Detective Sergeant. He then returned in July 2021 as a Patrol Sergeant.
- Employee of the Year – Blake Abdella (Property and Evidence Tech) – Blake currently handles evidence/property for both the Craig Police Department and Moffat County Sheriff’s Office. Blake started with the Police Department in 2007 and worked as a Community Service Officer for approximately six months prior to becoming the property/evidence Technician. Blake had been a certified officer for 12 years prior to coming to the Craig Police Department.
CRAIG POLICE RECOGNIZE THREE EMPLOYEES
In Steamboat Springs, the police and fire rescue departments are having a holiday battle. Both are trying to collect the most food and monetary donations for LiftUp of Routt County. The contest runs through New Years. Collection bins for food and personal items for LiftUp are at the police and fire stations and City Hall.
SSPD AND SSFR SUPPORT LIFTUP WITH CHALLENGE
The Bureau of Land Management is hiring at least 100 paid interns across the country. Four locations were announced for Colorado and one includes the Little Snake Field Office in Craig. The BLM internships in Colorado will provide experience and training in programs including natural resources, outdoor recreation, land surveying, and geographic information systems. Applications are open on usajobs.gov through this Monday, Dec. 18, 2023.
BLM TO HIRE PAID INTERNS IN CRAIG AND ACROSS COUNTRY
The Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center has sent an update on their “Name-The-Wolf” contest that they are doing with middle school students. They say 68 schools are participating. We have asked, and none of the schools are here in Northwest Colorado. Of the 14 potential names being voted on by the kids, the top pick so far is “Aspen,” as a name for a wolf. The contest ends Dec. 20.
The Veterans Center in Steamboat Springs is hosting a Holiday Homecoming. It’s so the local veterans and anyone in the community can meet any active military members who may be coming home for the holidays. The winners of the 2023 Festival of Trees in Craig are:
- 1st: Walking in a Winter Wonderland by Craig Middle School!
- 2nd: Love Came Down by Love INC of the Yampa Valley
- 3rd: Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree by Solving SUD Together (Substance Use Disorder)
Sunshine Peak at Steamboat Resort has opened a day early Tuesday, instead of today. Steamboat Resort sends word it’s due to the hard work of patrol to lift ops to the groomers, and snowmakers. The entire Wild Blue Gondola opens Friday morning. Steamboat Resort will now be at 30 percent open, with more than 60 trails, 16 lifts, and 1,100 acres.
Author Polly Holyoke met with students at Steamboat Springs High School Tuesday. She is the award-winning author of the Neptune Trilogy and Skyriders books.
Look up tonight. Gary Boyle, the Backyard Astronomer says the annual Geminid Meteor Shower will peak tonight, with up to 120 meteors per hour and some bright fireballs.
