You’ll see eight blue boxes, now propped up on legs around Craig, Maybell, and Hayden. It’s part of the Little Library program, presented by the Rotary Club of Craig.
The Little Library boxes were built by Hayden FFA students (pictured) under the direction of Eric Wellman.
The philosophy of the Little Library program is to “Take a Book, Leave a Book.” It’s for kids, teens, and adults. You can take a book out of the box to read, and then return it later to be enjoyed by others. Randy Looper with Craig Rotary says it is “paying it forward” with books.
“Craig Rotary has been pushing literacy forever. That’s been our main deal. And this is just a neat way to get books out into more people’s hands. Not just the kids. Currently we do a lot of stuff with elementary school and high school but not much outside of that. So this is a way to get books in the hands of adults and people around the whole community. Take one and put a different book back.”
The Rotary Club of Craig has installed eight Little Libraries and they plan to install five more this spring.
The Little Libraries support the Book Buddies program which was established in 1998. That’s where the local Rotarians read to 2nd graders at all Moffat County elementary schools once a month throughout the school year, and at each visit, they give every 2nd grade student a book to take home to build their own library.
Here is the map of the locations of the current and future Little Libraries.
