Routt County Commissioners held a combined meeting with Steamboat Springs City Council members Monday to hear about passenger rail and a train that would run from Denver to Steamboat Springs and on to Craig. The executive director of the Colorado Department of Transportation, Shoshana Lew, was at the meeting. She said the possibility of it happening looks promising.
“The possibility of transforming this community through inter-city passenger rail could really have a number of complimentary benefits for the economy ranging from helping the tremendous growth that happens in a way that is oriented around transit that connects housing to jobs to tourism to recreation to businesses. Helping with the Just Transitioning communities like Craig and Hayden who are so enthusiastic about the possibility of passenger rail and really showing the country that rail is not just an urban conversation that one that can have incredible impact in rural communities and bringing the mountains together like they do in other countries where we’re some ways behind in this country.”
Lew said there is bipartisan support, and they’re hiring a Mountain Rail Project Manager. Funding is available through private and public partnerships, grants and loans.

Only three people showed up to an information session with organizers of the SBT GRVL ride. They were there to give an update on the race and the Routt County Large Event Permitting Process. At past meetings, rural residents have filled the room, voicing their frustrations with the amount of riders, and how it is disruptive to their ranching operations when thousands of cyclists are on the roads. Amy Charity runs the SBT GRVL ride.
“We continue to listen to the rural residents and we’ve gotten some great feedback. We are feeling good about moving forward and solving problems and really looking to work closely with the rural community to have an event that everyone is happy about.”
The Large Event Permit has not yet been confirmed and neither has the race course, but events will be capped at 3,000 people. The SBT GRVL ride is Aug. 18 and it is sold out.

Cookie Lockhart was surprised Saturday night, when she was honored at the Colorado Auctioneers Convention in Denver. It was her 60th year from when she graduated from the Reisch American School of Auctioneering as the only woman in the class out of 126 men.
“Oh my gosh, it was a surprise. I just didn’t realize it would be that big of a deal. Here’s all these important people and it’s all about me, and I went, ‘Oh my God.’”
85-year-old Cookie Lockhart moved to Steamboat Springs back in 1941. She holds the honor of being the first female auctioneer inducted into the National Auctioneers Association Hall of Fame.
Cookie Lockhart will be joining me as Guest DJ on Easy 94-1 from 3-7 p.m. Tuesday.
