Slow down at local schools, during pick up and drop off. It has especially been a problem at Soda Creek Elementary in Steamboat Springs, which has four stop signs out front. Here’s School Resource Officer Lisa Eifling.
“One of the things I’m seeing is that people are rolling through the stop signs. They’re not stopping fully at the stop sign. Also, they need to listen to the crossing guards, but also stop at the stop sign as well, even if the crossing guard’s stop sign is not up. We want to make sure that speed is not a factor and make sure these kiddos get to school safe.”
Steamboat Police and the Routt County Sheriff’s Office are doing extra patrols at Soda Creek and in school zones to make sure everyone is driving safely. And they are issuing tickets.
Here are some tips from School Resource Officers and school administration when driving through school zones.
- Students should only exit or enter their car in the loop or when safely parked in a legal parking spot.
- Students should never exit the car while at the stop sign or in the street.
- The bus lane should not be utilized as a drop-off spot.
- Allow ample room between your car and the crosswalk attendant and students.
- Respect the stop sign and come to a complete stop.
- The preschool parking lot must be used only for preschool families.
