Steamboat Springs realtor and bookkeeper Martha “Suzi” Hawkins, 63, was convicted in Routt County District Court Friday of two felony counts for embezzling over $790K from her employer, a local ranch owner. The District Attorney’s office she faces up to 12 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections for each conviction. Sentencing is scheduled for mid May.
The subcontractors for the postal service, based in Steamboat Springs and Craig, were paid for a portion of their work on Friday. It was over $1 million dollars for work done since October. The local contractor, Petrona Pusey, says she has been told more of the paperwork has been approved so the subcontractors can continue to get paid money owed to them.

Congressman Joe Neguse has announced Community Project Funding for 14 projects across the state. One is $1 million for the Steamboat Springs Workforce Housing Pedestrian and Bicycle Connection Project. Another $1 million goes to Yampa Valley Wastewater Infrastructure. A third goes to Jackson County. The Sheriff’s Office there will receive $254,000 for modernization.

Harmon Buckland celebrated his 91st birthday at The Veterans Center in Steamboat Springs Saturday. They call him, “Buck.” And the birthday party was a surprise.
“It is wonderful. It is a total, of course, surprise, because after you get up around 91 you never know when you’re going to get another one but you just keep hoping that they will keep coming.”
Buck served in the United States Air Force in the Korean War. He served in Vietnam. He worked for the National Security Agency for 35 years. And he was in Berlin when the wall came down in 1989. Buck moved to Routt County back in 1997 and worked for many years at Ferrell Gas.
Routt County has committed to $100,000 in helping towards the historic renovation of the old VFW Building at 924 Lincoln Ave. The amount raised to date is $2,325,000, from donations across the United States. The goal is $3M. Construction is expected to begin May 1 with a completion date of April 2025.
Donations are still being accepted through Yampa Valley Community Foundation.
The host team University of Colorado Buffaloes won their 21st National NCAA Ski Championship over the weekend in Steamboat Springs.



The Women’s Slalom U18 National Champion is Noelle Roth from Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club. Katharina Cosby was 4th, and Cosby also took 2nd in Women’s Giant Slalom. Also making the podium for the men was Adrian Beauregard in 3rd for Men’s Super G and he was third overall. The U18 Nationals were in Jackson Hole.
Eight SSWSC alpine athletes were named to the Rocky Central U18 Nationals Team and are headed to Jackon, Wyoming, today for the U18 National Alpine Championships March 2-8, 2024. Katharina Cosby, Noelle Roth, Hazel Fernley, Kahlen White, and Mollie McTique were named to the women’s team. Curtis Zanni, Adrian Beauregard, and Caman Beauregard were named to the men’s team.
