Be prepared for delays through downtown Steamboat Springs. Those delays will be between seven and ten minutes starting today, and mainly when there is a high volume of traffic through downtown, such as the morning and evening commute. Concrete rehabilitation work is being down on U.S. Highway 40 through the end of June.
Colorado Department of Transportation is doing the work on sidewalk curb ramps. The curbs are being updated to meet current requirements for safe travel for all pedestrians. There are 71 curb ramps in downtown Steamboat Springs. Thirty-two of them need to have minimal repairs. Nine of those will need to be replaced.
The work is being done on the ADA ramps, which is the acronym for the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Elise Thatcher with CDOT writes, “The sidewalk ramps need to be updated to meet PROWAG standards. PROWAG is the acronym for Public Right-of-Way Accessibility Guidelines. The current ADA ramps in downtown Steamboat Springs were constructed in 2009-2010 and were constructed per the standards at that time. CDOT adopted the PROWAG standards with an update to Procedural Directive 605.1 “ADA Accessibility Requirements in CDOT Transportation Projects” that had an effective date of March 31, 2017.”
The ramps being fixed are from 3rd to 13th Street along Lincoln Ave. CDOT’s goal is to ensure the sidewalks in the project area meet the current requirements for all pedestrians to be able to safely use the sidewalks in downtown Steamboat Springs.
