A wildland fire burned about 35 acres, about five miles north of Hayden Monday. No injuries and no structures were damaged. West Routt Fire Chief Trevor Guire says a burn pile got out of control.
“Just be aware that as these brushes and these grasses come out from underneath the snow, they have not greened up, they have not brought any moisture out of the ground into them. And they are available fuels for file. Just be really careful with your open burns and your yard cleanup.”
West Routt Fire had help from Hayden Police, Routt County Road & Bridge and Routt County Sheriff’s office, the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office and Moffat County Office of Emergency Management, BLM, the Routt County Office of Emergency Management and the Mad Creek Module with the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control.

U.S. Senators Hickenlooper and Bennet have sent a letter to U.S. Postmaster Louis DeJoy about a proposal to consolidate the Grand Junction Processing and Distribution Center for mail. All mail instead would go through Denver, and that includes some mail from population centers in Wyoming and Nebraska. The senators against the proposal, saying it would negatively impact mail delivery speeds, especially in mountain communities. The Craig and Hayden post offices get their mail from Grand Junction. If it happened, all outgoing mail would go through Denver for sorting. That means mail starting in Grand Junction would go to Denver one day, and then back to Grand Junction to be delivered the next, which is over 500 miles round trip. The senators want to know about weather delays, and road closures, and possible layoffs.

The winter snow has worn away a lot of striping on the streets in Steamboat Springs. The striping contractor won’t be here until June to put down the new striping, which includes arrows for turn lanes. The city is putting down some traffic tape though, to help identify the center lanes and turn lanes.

Until further notice, the floating dock at Loudy-Simpson Park is closed. It has some winter damage that needs to be repaired.
