The groundbreaking ceremony for the Northwest Colorado Business Park was Wednesday. It’s just outside of Hayden, between Hwy 40 and Yampa Valley Regional Airport. Bob Reese is Mayor Pro Tem of Hayden.
“This is all part of our forward plan. I believe being on the Council, I believe our responsibility isn’t only today and tomorrow, but we’ve got to look 20 years down the road, and this will take us 20 years down the road along with the housing projects that we’re doing. And this isn’t the end, it’s just the beginning.”
The Northwest Colorado Business District is owned by the Town of Hayden. It will include 117.1 acres with 23 lots. The land is zoned for light industrial which allows for workforce housing. Access will be from Highway 40. It’s also 1.6 miles from a Union Pacific Railroad spur which is at the Xcel Energy Hayden Station. The Town of Hayden will build new water and sewer mains, and electrical lines. Phase One will include 58 acres in development with 13 lots, and is expected to be finished by the end of the year.

Where’s the Water? The water is much lower in the Black Sulphur Spring, which sits along the Yampa River, on the edge of the railroad tracks by the library.
Dagny McKinley is on the Mineral Springs Committee with the city and has written a book called, “The Springs of Steamboat.” She’s concerned the damage was done when the railroad ties were replaced along the tracks last fall.
“I can’t even express how important these springs are to who we are. Every time one gets lost, we lost the Steamboat Spring when the railroad first came through. We lost the Soda Spring when the expanded the highway in 1988.”
Last year, the Steamboat Springs Historic Preservation Committee designated nine city-owned springs as historic landmarks, with the hopes of getting them on the National Register of Historic Places. But not the Black Sulphur Spring as it is on land owned by Union Pacific, but still managed by the City of Steamboat Springs.

Join Routt County Riders and The Cycle Effect for a night of short films and conversations centered around women in the mountain biking world, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 18, at Bud Werner Library Hall and it is free and family-friendly.

In Sailor Sports Thursday afternoon, the Steamboat Springs baseball team has a doubleheader in Glenwood Springs. Steamboat hosts a track meet at Gardner Field. The Soroco Rams will be there.
