4-H is a community of young people, across America, learning leadership, citizenship and life skills.

4-H Vision is  A world in which youth and adults learn, grow and work together as catalysts for positive change.

One of the largest project areas in 4-H is the Shooting Sports project.  The 4-H shooting sports project:

  • Encourage participation in natural resource and natural science programs through shooting, hunting and related activities.
  • Develop self-concept, character and personal growth through involvement in safe, educational and socially acceptable shooting activities.
  • Teach safe, responsible use of firearms and archery equipment including sound decision-making, self-discipline and concentration.
  • Promote highest standards of safety, sportsmanship and ethical behavior.
  • Furnish enjoyable, positive relationships with peers and adult instructors.
  • Strengthen families through participation in lifelong recreational activities.

We are excited to have Schuyler Routt as our archery shooting sports leader for the Steamboat area for his second year.  Please meet Schuyler Routt:

Schuyler and his wife Margaret moved to Steamboat Springs in 2021, where they quickly put down roots and built community.  Schuyler works for Google, where he is a strategy consultant to leadership teams.  When not working, you can find Schuyler outdoors.  In the winter you can find him skiing with his wife and daughter, or in the warmer months at various hiking trails.  Schuyler shot competitively in compound archer where he attained the Olympian & Silver Olympian awards through USA Archery’s Junior Olympic Archery Development program.  He later switched to the recurve discipline with hopes of making the US Olympic team, and went on to shoot in college to pursue that goal.  While never qualifying for the Olympic team, Schuyler continues his passion for the sport as a second year 4-H volunteer archery coach, where he loves sharing his experience as a nationally ranked archer with youth interested in shootings sports.

Routt County 4-H Shooting Sports program offers project instruction in Archery. .22 Rifle, .22 Pistol, Air Rifle, Air Pistol and Shotgun.  All of our shooting sports leaders attended a three day 4-H shooting sports training.  4-H Shooting Sports is an affordable youth program available for youth ages 8-18 (as of Jan. 1 2024).  Our 4-H enrollment deadline is May 1, 2024, so get enrolled today through 4HOnline.   If you would like more information about the 4-H Shooting Sports program please contact the Routt County CSU Extension Office at RC4H@co.routt.co.us or call us at 970-879-0825.
