The new 8th Street Redevelopment Project in Craig is quickly being put together with 40 modular units into 20 new townhomes. Here’s Craig City Manager Peter Brixius, who is also the Executive Director of the Craig Housing Authority.
“This is a first for the community in over 40 years as we build a multi-family housing project. We’re excited about it. It’s the first project of the new Craig Housing Authority.”
The modular boxes were built in Buena Vista and transferred up here. There will be eight three-bedroom townhomes and 12 two-bedroom units, for singles and families.
It’s on the site of the former property for Memorial Regional Health in Craig. Yampa Valley Community Foundation provided a $2.5 million loan to help with the funding.
The units are deed restricted and available for those with a median household income of between $50K and $130K. The units should be ready by the first of August. Pre-applications are being accepted.

Construction on the public turnaround in Ski Time Square begins today. The streetscape will have new snowmelt sidewalks, landscaping will be upgraded, and a new public turnaround will be at the end of the public right of way. During construction, there will be no public parking on the street along Ski Time Square Drive. People wishing to reach the businesses there can park in the Torian Plum Parking Garage. Construction should be finished by November.

Sunday was the last day of the season for Steamboat Resort. The slopes are now closed.
Wes Richey is retiring as head of Ski Patrol for Steamboat Resort. Richey has been with the ski area for 46 years.
“46 years… I just turned 68. That’s kind of tradition. That’s how old John Kohnke was when he retired. And I was just ready. It’s been a long time. So, it’s time to just move aside and let somebody else take over.”
Richey says he will stay on part-time for a while, helping with the budget and then he’ll help train those who will be leading the slope maintenance team. Richey says he might continue as a ski patrol volunteer next season since his credentials are still active.
We asked what he’ll miss the most.
“I’m going to be happy not doing paperwork. The most I’m going to miss are the people, everybody I work with.”
