Controlled flushing of the main water lines in Steamboat Springs begins Thursday, May 16. Flushing the system removes sediment that naturally settles in pipes over time and especially during the low flow periods.
This is also a way to test the over 1,000 fire hydrants in the city. During the annual testing, residents may see discolored water and fluctuating water pressures, but that should clear up quickly. Residents can run cold water from a bathtub for 10 to 15 minutes to help clear the water. However unlikely, if water doesn’t clear up, turn off tub faucet, and wait 30 to 60 minutes before attempting to clear the line again.

City Water Team Preforms Main Line & Fire Hydrants Testing & Maintenance
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-April 30, 2024-With the improvements to the Fish Creek Water Treatment Plant currently underway until May 15, the city’s water team will wait to open the valve on its annual controlled flushing of the main water line network until May 16.
“Our team is responsible for the water mains, fire hydrants, and valves that provide fire protection and potable water to your home or business,” said Distribution & Collection System Manager Michelle Carr. “This is just one aspect of the work, which is typically out of the public view, that constantly goes into ensuring the city’s system remains in good working order for our community.”
Following the completion of Fish Creek Water Treatment Plant Phase 2B enhancements, crews will begin flushing the system on Thursday, May 16 and will continue through the spring.

Además, el programa permite que cada boca de incendios (más de 1.000) sea revisada y probada para garantizar que se encuentra en buenas condiciones de funcionamiento.
Durante las pruebas y el servicio anuales, los residentes pueden experimentar agua descolorida y presiones de agua fluctuantes. El agua debería aclararse rápidamente, y los residentes pueden dejar correr el agua fría de una bañera durante 10 a 15 minutos para ayudar a aclarar el agua. Sin embargo, si el agua no se aclara, cierre el grifo de la bañera y espere de 30 a 60 minutos antes de volver a intentar aclarar la tubería.
«El proceso de purga está diseñado para mantener la calidad del agua en los niveles más altos y garantizar que las bocas de incendios estén operativas», continuó Carr. «Dado que la planta de tratamiento de agua depende del agua de los pozos Yampa durante las mejoras, queríamos esperar a que volviera a estar operativa antes de realizar este trabajo crítico».
La planta de tratamiento de agua de Fish Creek comenzó las mejoras de la fase 2B el 1 de abril y se prevé que termine con esta parte del proyecto el 15 de mayo y vuelva a extraer agua de Fish Creek. En el proyecto se están instalando nuevos sistemas, aparatos de control y equipos de reserva.
