Today was a happy graduation ceremony at Discovery Learning Center, with Pre-K kids in Miss Kylie’s class. Kylie Leggett was there, after recently getting home from 30 days in the hospital in Loveland. Leggett was attacked and stabbed on April 23 when she was house-sitting at a home in Steamboat Springs, over spring break, from someone she didn’t know.
“No, it’s happy tears. It means a lot. I am really thankful that I was able to recover so quickly so I could be up here to celebrate this special time with all of my students and I’m just so grateful, and thankful, and blessed just for all of the support from the community and knowing that when I go home it’s going to be OK. And it just means a lot to be back. My students are my everything and they have grown and blossomed so much this year and it’s just amazing to be able to come back and see everything that I’ve taught them that they’re still doing in class and it’s just such a joy.”
The person accused in the attack is a 16-year-old juvenile, who was arrested on multiple felony charges, and is still in a juvenile detention facility in Grand Junction. The next court date is July 23. Steamboat Springs Police confirms that this person is also a suspect in vandalism done at Wild Plum Market in late March.

Third graders from Steamboat Springs learned about ranching and agriculture Thursday for Ranch Days, coordinated by the Routt County Cattlewomen. The Stanko Ranch, Monger Ranch, and Belton Ranch hosted kids from Steamboat Springs schools.
“I like about Ranch Days that we get to see dogs and we get to pet lambs. And I love cows.”
That’s Ailie, who is a third grader from Soda Creek. Her grade visited the Stanko Ranch.
Jim Stanko’s family has lived at the ranch on 20-Mile Road just outside of Steamboat Springs since 1907.
“The Ranch Days are important because kids now are not coming from the rural agricultural community. They’re coming from the urban areas and they’re being brought up that food comes from Safeway. And they need to know that food comes from agriculture and that agriculture is still a very important part of the community.”
The kids learned about farm equipment, cows, sheep, and guard dogs, and also the names of the local mountains.
Third graders at Strawberry Park Elementary visited the Monger Ranch on County Road 44. The Mongers are sixth generation homesteaders in Routt County.
