The fireworks up at Steamboat Lake Saturday night backfired with a big bang.
“It was an explosion. Everything went off, and it didn’t go up. It went sideways, it went out. You could see it going across the island.”
That’s Karl Bunker, owner of the Steamboat Lake Marina.
It was a malfunction that blew up the rest of the fireworks at once, according to Steamboat Lake Park manager Julie Arington.
“There was some type of malfunction with one of the fireworks and that malfunction kind of blew apart some of the racks and the control equipment that was controlling the other fireworks. Once that happened, obviously we couldn’t continue the show.”
All boats were immediately cleared on the lake.
North Routt Fire Chief Matt Mathisen said three fire technicians had minor injuries, and they were treated at the scene.
An investigation will be done as to what caused the fireworks malfunction.
Arington says she isn’t sure yet if fireworks will continue next year. They’re paid for through donations to a non-profit group called FriendsofColoradoStateParks.com They do fundraising to provide the show which is a longtime tradition in North Routt County.
