Craig Housing Authority and the Yampa Valley Community Foundation have been honored with the 2024 Secretary’s Award for Public-Philanthropic Partnerships. The recognition is from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Only six groups from across the country were selected as a recipient of the award.
It has to do with the 8th Street Townhomes development project in Craig which was funded with a below market-rate construction loan through Yampa Valley Community Foundation. It’s affordable housing. The units are for sale and should be ready next month.
Presale reservations are now open through Cornerstone Realty. More information is also available through the Craig Housing Authority.
Tim Wohlgenant with YVCF and Craig City Manager and CHA Executive Director Peter Brixius accepted the award on July 11, at HUD headquarters in Washington, D.C.

More housing… this time Brown Ranch.

A nonprofit called Community Builders is in Steamboat Springs to listen and understand everything about Brown Ranch and to help with a new plan. A city-wide vote in March resulted in the plan that was offered for Brown Ranch by Yampa Valley Housing Authority to be voted down.
Clark Anderson is the Executive Director with Community Builders. He grew up in the Vail Valley and now lives in Glenwood Springs. He says he wants to the community to problem solve together on Brown Ranch.
“It’s not only OK that we disagree, we probably should because these are questions of how we’re going to grow as a community and what that looks like in the future. And those are important things that we have opinions about.”
But Anderson says community members need to be productive and work together.
“The work that we are going to do is going to ask of people to come in with open minds, to learn from each other. Ultimately, this project, while I know the past was frustrating and there was a lot of hurt feelings and it was difficult, Steamboat can come out stronger, and that’s what the goal is going to be.”

The Colorado Department of Local Affairs has awarded $800K to boost Colorado’s rural communities. Almost $141K of that is being given to Steamboat Springs and the Yampa Valley Entrepreneurial Ecosystem.
From the DOLA website, “This project will build an entrepreneurial ecosystem by developing a business accelerator, incubator, mentorship network, capital/investor network, and community-building initiatives. It will include educational and skill development programs on business formation, planning, and expansion, covering all aspects of business operations. The applicant anticipates creating 40 new jobs through startups, which will bring direct jobs and economic stability. These businesses will create a ripple effect, fostering indirect and induced jobs through supply chains, contractors, and local spending.”
