Hazy smoke is blowing through the Yampa Valley. It’s from fires in Canada. Check with PurpleAir.com to check the air quality.

 

Two Steamboat Springs residents are in the Routt County Jail on felony charges. Mark Niswander and Julia Miller are allegedly involved in a few cases of check fraud and theft from local community members and businesses. They were arrested on July 10. Steamboat Springs Police have asked if anyone in the community knows of any other suspicious activity involving these two, to please reach out to the police department at 970-879-1144. Press Release

 All persons accused of crimes are presumed innocent until and unless their guilt is established beyond a reasonable doubt in court.

 

Seminars at Steamboat had a very powerful speaker Monday night at Strings, with Nancy Gibbs, the former TIME Editor-in-Chief and now Harvard professor. The topic was “Policy Issues Driving the Presidential Election.” She stressed the importance of being involved in the political process.

“I think there are lots of ways people can get involved. They can run for office. They can work for candidates who are running for office. Certainly learn what their local candidates are saying. Volunteer. Sign up people to vote. Be sure they vote themselves. And support their local news.”

The 12 new pickleball courts in the indoor facility at the Steamboat Tennis and Pickleball Complex in Steamboat Springs are ready to go and in play.

Steven “Moz” Modzelewski is the chair of the board for Court Sports 4 Life Foundation which has been raising the money to build the new indoor pickleball facility.

“We so excited. I think the words in everybody’s mouths are ‘Zero Zero Two!’ That’s the score you shout out at the beginning of a game and so this is the beginning of a new era of pickleball in Steamboat and we’re proud to be a part of it and bring it to the community.”

The entire project is about $12.5 million. Over $7.5 million has been raised privately so far. The new center is hosting the Colorado State Pickleball Championships, Sept. 13-15.

The Moffat County Board of County Commissioners meets today. Agenda items include reports from Finance, and the office of Emergency Management about establishing ambulance service areas. The Moffat County Balloon Fest is also asking for a Special Event Liquor License.

 

Then the Moffat County Commissioners are having a combined workshop this afternoon with Craig City Council. They’ll discuss the multi-million dollar Tri-State Settlement. Craig City Council then meets with the Craig Housing Authority, followed by their regular meeting. One agenda item involves a resolution to allow indoor climate controlled self-storage units in part of Centennial Mall. That’s all at City Hall in Craig.

 

Monday was College Champions Day at the White House in Washington DC. Steamboat Springs was represented by Chase Seymour, who skis for the University of Colorado Buffaloes. That team won the 2024 NCAA Championships this year, which were actually held in Steamboat Springs. Jack Reich also skied for SSWSC and CMC and he was there as was CU Coach Chad Wolk, who is now the head Alpine FIS Coach for SSWSC in Steamboat Springs.

The Routt County Humane Society is having an adoption event Wednesday afternoon at Steamboat Ace Hardware. It’s from 1-3 p.m. There will be plenty of puppies and kittens there, who are looking for their forever homes.

Bring a cat carrier with you to safely transport your new cat home. Also, adoption fees for dogs are $50 off this month.
