Remember to be aware of the smoky haze in the Yampa Valley, because of those fires in Canada. That’s where the smoke is coming from. Check your local air quality with real time levels at PurpleAir.com to determine what your outdoor activities should be. Last night, levels were still over 100 in Craig and Hayden, and South and North Routt counties. Numbers were below 80 in Steamboat Springs.
Work is being done in the Bears Ears area in Routt National Forest, in the Elkhead Mountain Range. It’s part of a fuels and restoration project that will affect 57,000 acres in Routt and Moffat counties, including Wilderness Ranch, Hitch Mountain, and Quaker Mountain. It will improve forest health by reducing wildfire risk and protect watersheds. It will help with Elkhead Reservoir and the water supply for the City of Craig. There will be some prescribed fires as part of the work. Some work will begin in the fall.

The Marshall House will not be torn down. It’s getting prepped for the big move next month. The Marshall House will be moved a few blocks down from 12th and Oak where it is now to the empty lot behind Smell That Bread. That lot is being cleared to bare dirt this week to make room for the Marshall House, which is the first wood frame home ever built in Steamboat Springs, back in 1888. Today, landscapers will be boxing up the fruit trees on the property. The owners are hoping to rebuild a garden around the house that will look like the house did 100 years ago.
