Steamboat Announces Two New Vice Presidents
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO– August 20, 2024- In preparation for the 2024/25 winter season, Steamboat Ski Resort announces two new Vice Presidents to round out the Senior Leadership Team of the world-class mountain destination. Corey Peterson will assume the role of Vice President Mountain Operations and Nelson Wingard will step into the new position of Vice President of SnowSports School.
“Steamboat is known for a few things: Champagne Powder® snow, Olympians, being the friendliest mountain destination and cultivating the best leaders in the industry,” said Dave Hunter, president and COO of Steamboat Ski Resort. “Any opportunity we have to promote incredible team members and retain individuals who share our vision of staying true to Steamboat’s roots while planning for the future, is a win. Corey was destined for the role of Mountain Operations VP and I’m excited to see him fulfil his potential. Nelson has a proven track record of incredible success at the resort, making the Steamboat SnowSports School an industry leader and I know he’ll bring the same passion to his new role in helping the resort align on future direction.”
Corey Peterson has been at the center of mountain operations at Steamboat Ski Resort for nearly twenty years, most recently as the Vice President of Engineering, Maintenance and Facilities (EMF), while also overseeing mountain operations in an interim VP role during the 2023/24 winter while resort leadership transitioned from Rob Perlman to Dave Hunter. Peterson will now fully assume the VP role and will continue to oversee the resort’s engineering, maintenance and facilities departments until a new Vice President of EMF is hired. In his new role, Peterson will be responsible for the long-term planning and strategic oversight of all mountain operations departments including snowmaking, grooming, lifts operations and maintenance, patrol and more.
Peterson started at Steamboat in 2004 as a snowmaker and worked his way through assistant snowmaking manager, snowmaking manager, and director of operations since 2019 and was responsible for much of the management of Full Steam Ahead on-mountain improvements including Wild Blue Gondola and Mahogany Ridge. During his tenure, Peterson has been a finalist for the Colorado Ski Country, USA Snowmaker of the Year award and a finalist of the “I Am A Snowmaker” award from Ski Area Management Magazine. He serves on internal resort committees focused on talent development, safety and charitable contributions, as well as CSCUSA committees and acts as a trainer for industry events.
Nelson Wingard has been involved in the ski industry for nearly forty years with almost twenty seasons dedicated to the SnowSports school at Steamboat Ski Resort. In his newly created role of VP of SnowSports School, Wingard will be responsible for the oversight of the SnowSports school, including Mountain Camp and Steamboats bike park operations and bike school.
Nelson started as Director of SnowSports School ahead of the 2005/06 season. During his tenure the SnowSports School has grown in staff, revenue and innovative products. Wingard was an integral part of developing and executing Greenhorn Ranch, the resort’s new, on-mountain dedicated beginners’ area which opened in 2022. A leader in the ski industry, Wingard has been a member of the Professional Ski Instructor Association (PSIA) since 1989. In the Northwest, he served on the technical team and as the children’s committee chairman. In 2004, he earned a spot on the National Alpine Demonstration Team and currently serves as an examiner for the Rocky Mountain Division.
Peterson and Wingard will start in their respective roles effective immediately and will report directly to Dave Hunter.
