The Steamboat High School Mountain Bike team of 29 riders from Steamboat High School and Steamboat Mountain School competed in Frisco over the weekend. Many were in the top ten of their divisions with Sydney Soard, Whitney Warnke, and Allie Reznicek, making the podium in their categories. The Showdown in the ‘Boat is another statewide high school mountain bike race and it is in Steamboat Springs Sept. 7-8.

Success for young riders in Steamboat High School Mountain Bike Team’s first race in The Colorado High School Cycling League
Girls take home top-three finishes, many athletes had top-10 finishes, and the team takes second place in Division 2

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. – The Steamboat High School Mountain Bike team took home three top-three finishes, multiple top-10 finishes, and 2nd place in Division 2 at the first race of The Colorado High School Cycling League race series on Saturday, August 24, at the Frisco Bay Invitational in Frisco, Colorado. 415 racers competed in the Yampa Division race on Saturday – 29 riders from Steamboat High School and Steamboat Mountain School. Riders raced two or three laps of a 5.9-mile course, including a mix of singletrack, double track, and dirt roads. Sydney Soard took the win for the freshman girls, with 37 girls racing. Allie Reznicek was second in the sophomore girls’ race and Whitney Warnke was 2nd place in the junior varsity (JV) girls’ race. Other notable results include a 10th place finish for Thomas Agosta in the boy’s varsity race, Jesse Weaver in 7th place in the girls’ JV race, Schuyler Biglow was 10th in the boys’ sophomore race, and Lindsay Berke was 10th in the girls’ sophomore race. For the freshman, Lucia Magnotta was 7th for the girls; in the boys’ race, Robbie Wodnik was 4th; Odin Gruben was 8th; and Caleb Walker was 9th. Racing started early on Saturday, with the JV boys at 8:15 a.m. The weather started out perfectly with sunshine and cool temperatures. The five racers, Rowen Hanaughan, Jackson Sloop, Elliot Nance, and Ian Maclarney, had a great race.
The second race on Saturday was the varsity boys race. Thomas Agosta and Luke Bedell did three laps and did very well. Agosta started the race in the back but worked his way up to 10th place varsity finish.
Next up was the sophomore boys’ race – the team had six racers in this category – Schuyler Biglow, Oscar Libin, Jackson Rosencrantz, Rowen Hanaughan, Logan Drury, and Morgan Garrett.

The next set of races was the JV and sophomore girls – with two girls in the JV category, Whitney Warnke and Jesse Weaver, and two in the sophomore category, Allie Reznicek and Lindsay Berke, the team was well represented. Whitney Warnke took 2nd for the JV girls, and Allie Reznicek took 2nd for the sophomore girls – it was also Reznicek’s birthday, which made for a fun Happy Birthday podium!
The last race of the day was the freshman boys and girls – this was a time trial, and the freshman took the distinction of being the largest category on the Steamboat team with nine boys, Robbie Wodnik, Odin Gruben, Caleb Walker, Henry Davis, Soren Shepherd, Daniel Crocker, Mitchell McLarney, Mason Lipscomb, and Quinn Dressen and four girls, Sydney Soard, Lucia Magnotta, Ellis Dressensorfer, and Julia Boness. The future looks bright – Sydney Soard took 1st place for the freshman girls.
The next race is the Showdown in the Boat, September 7-8 here in Steamboat Springs. The Steamboat team will race on Sunday, September 8. It takes a community to support the high school mountain bike races. In the results, Legacy means the rider has raced all four years of their high school career. Steamboat has two seniors who are Legacy racers this year.
The Colorado League consists of more than 160 high schools. The 2024 race series has four regions: Yampa, Crystal, Piedra, and Platte. Steamboat Springs High School students and Steamboat Mountain School students race in the Yampa division. The Colorado League facilitates the development of interscholastic mountain bike cycling teams for grades 9-12. The program promotes positive youth development through interscholastic mountain biking for high school students in Colorado, southern Wyoming, northern New Mexico, and Spearfish, South Dakota.
