American flags are going up on the lawn at Yampa Valley Bank starting at 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 10. It is part of the Never Forget Project in Routt County to honor and remember the victims of 9/11 along with the 400 first responders who died and the many who died later from their injuries.
Steamboat Springs High School Junior Sofia Scherff-Zamora is one of the students coordinating the project this year.
“I know for me personally I kind of came into it with the understanding that I think probably maybe most kids my age have, how they’ve been born after 9/11. Because I’m 16. So it’s like this visual that I think really helps the gravity of this day that can be hard to get from reading about it.”

More than 8,600 flags will be placed in the grass in front of the bank.
The Never Forget Project in Steamboat Springs was started by Kyle Case back in 2015, when he was a freshman at Steamboat Springs High School.
Donations to help replenish the flags and pay for supplies can be made at Yampa Valley Bank.
