Park Smalley of Steamboat Springs is considered the “Father of Freestyle.” He was the first head coach of the U.S. Freestyle Ski Team. Smalley has been named to the Class of 2024 U.S. Ski & Snowboard Team Hall of Fame.

The Run Rabbit Run ultramarathon starts Friday morning. This is a 50- and 100-mile run charity event in Steamboat Springs and Routt County. Here’s Race Director Paul Sachs.
“It puts Steamboat right at the top of the charts as far as ultra running goes. Destination race. People come from all over to run this race. We have over 300 volunteers to help put it on. It’s a huge undertaking.”
Run Rabbit Run has the biggest purse for an ultra run in the world, with $75K in prize money, equally for men and women. 450 athletes will be in Steamboat Springs from across the country and around the world. Last year, Run Rabbit Run donated $55K to local charities.

The Colorado Snowmobile Grant Program will provide over $1 million for winter trail grooming, equipment and maintenance. This is through Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Local clubs registered under the Colorado Snowmobile Associate program are eligible to apply.
The Local Marketing District in Moffat County meets at 4 p.m. this afternoon, in Commissioners Chambers. Grant requests being considered are from Memorial Regional Health and the Museum of Northwest Colorado.
United Way of the Yampa Valley is having $20K Day in Craig and $50K Day in Steamboat Springs, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13. Friday, Sept. 13, is the deadline for written comments to be received for the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). This is to continue with accreditation of the Associate Degree in Nursing program at Colorado Northwestern Community College. You can also share your comments at 7 p.m. next Tuesday, Sept. 17, in the library of the CNCC Academic Building on the Craig Campus.

It’s Homecoming Week at Steamboat Springs High School. The theme for the kids today is USA/Patriotic. The classes will be building floats in the parking lot this evening for the parade that starts at 1:40 p.m. on Friday. The boys tennis team plays Aspen at noon. The Sailor Boys Soccer team is away in Aspen for a game tonight.
The Steamboat High School Mountain Bike Girls Team continues to dominate in the Yampa region races in the Colorado High School Cycling League. Top podium finishes in the recent Showdown in the ‘Boat were from Mary McLarnon, Allie Reznicek and Sydney Soard, with Whitney Warnke taking second place for junior varsity.

The 4-H Shooting Sports team from Routt County recently competed in the Colorado 4-H State Shooting Sports Championships in Pueblo and Colorado Springs. It is a statewide competition where the kids learn markmanship, the safe and responsible use of firearms, and the principles of hunting and markmanship. The Routt County team had several first place finishes in different divisions. Individuals who won their divisions include Myka Cranwell and Mia Cranwell and Teagan Herold.
