The 4-H Shooting Sports team from Routt County recently competed in the Colorado 4-H State Shooting Sports Championships in Pueblo and Colorado Springs. It is a statewide competition where the kids learn markmanship, the safe and responsible use of firearms, and the principles of hunting and markmanship.
The Routt County team had several first place finishes in different divisions. Individuals who won their divisions include Myka Cranwell and Mia Cranwell and Teagan Herold. All results are below.

From Tami Eggers, the 4-H & Youth Development leader for the CSU Routt County Extension office.
The focus of all 4-H programs is the development of youth as individuals and as responsible and productive citizens. The 4-H Shooting Sports program stands out as an example. Youth learn marksmanship, the safe and responsible use of firearms, the principles of hunting and archery and much more. The activities of the program and the support of caring adult leaders provide young people with opportunities to develop life skills, self-worth and conservation ethics.
Specific objectives for the program are to:
- Teach decision making, teamwork, self-discipline, self-confidence and problem solving;
- Promote the highest standards of safety, sportsmanship and ethical behavior;
- Encourage an appreciation and understanding of natural resources;
- Develop leadership abilities;
- Build character and willingness to assume citizenship responsibility;
- Furnish enjoyable, positive relationships with peers and adult instructors;
- Strengthen families through participation in lifelong recreational activities;
- Build awareness of related career opportunities.
The Routt County 4-H Shooting Sports program offers project instruction in all parts of our county. We have Archery and .22 in Hayden; Archery, .22, Shotgun, Pistol, Air Rifle and Air Pistol in Steamboat and South Routt. For each of these disciplines in each part of our county we have trained volunteer leaders teaching our 4-H youth. Each of these leaders has attended a three-day 4-H shooting sports training to become a 4-H shooting sports leader.
