Parks & Recreation Cares For More Than 2,500 Trees in City Parks & Facilities
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-September 24, 2024-Fall is the perfect time to plant new roots for the future and the City of Steamboat Springs will host a free seedling giveaway this Saturday, September 28, to celebrate more than three decades as Tree City USA and Arbor Day, which officially occurred earlier this year.
The Arbor Day Tree Seedling Giveaway will take place from 8am to 11am on Saturday, September 28, 2024, in Emerald Park (900 Pamela Lane). Parks & Recreation will be handing out free native seedlings for individuals to plant on their property. In addition, the City Arborist along with a Colorado State Forest Service representative will be available to answer questions about proper tree planting.
Parks & Recreation oversees the city’s forestry program, taking care of more than 500 trees in streets, medians and right of ways and more than 2,500 trees in city parks and facilities.
The city supports forestry activities throughout the year with the Yampa Valley Sustainability Council, Colorado Parks & Wildlife, Colorado State Forest Service, and other volunteer civic groups.
The City of Steamboat Springs was named as a 2024 Tree City USA recipient by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its commitment to effective urban forest management. Out of the nearly 95 municipalities recognized in Colorado this year, 60 municipalities have achieved this milestone for 30 or more years, including Steamboat Springs, now in its 33rd consecutive year.
The Tree City USA program has been greening up cities and towns across America since 1976. It is a nationwide movement that provides the framework necessary for communities to manage and expand their public trees.
