Work on five deteriorating culverts is happening around Steamboat Springs. Watch for lane reductions and slower traffic in these areas. They are:
Central Park Drive and the Pine Grove Road intersection
Val D’Isere Circle
Fish Creek Falls Road near Highland Circle
Steamboat Blvd. near Graystone Drive
Harwig Circle near the lower Fish Creek Falls Road intersection
Work should be complete by Nov. 1.

Culvert Rehabilitation Ensures Water Goes With Flow
Five Culverts Benefit from UV Cured Methods & Trenchless Technique
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-October 10, 2024-Steamboat Springs is an easy and laid-back place, but when your flow is interrupted it can flood your world with big complications. So, the city is undertaking a culvert rehabilitation project at several locations to upgrade critical water infrastructure.
“There should be little impacts to roadways during this project,” commented Public Works Engineer Adan Comano. “However, folks will see some lane reductions, shoulder and bike lane closures in these locations, but traffic will always be allowed to pass through or will have access via an alternate route.”
The project sees mobilization and storage of equipment start this week. Crews will work in five locations over roughly a two-week period to upgrade five deteriorating culverts that play a key role in the city’s streamflow management system. All work is scheduled to be completed by November 1.
The project will reline the existing corrugated steel culvert with UV cured methods using a trenchless procedure that minimizes disturbance to adjacent roadways. PVC piping is used in a wide variety of applications including drinking water to fire sprinklers to stormwater management such as this aspect.
Trenchless construction can be used for replacement or rehabilitation efforts and utilizes the existing pipeline. The new pipeline is placed within the existing pipe and formed to the previous pipe. Although, the diameter of the new pipe is smaller the use of a smooth PVC pipe vs a rough corrugated pipe increases its ability to transport water. This is all conducted while the surface remains unaffected as opposed to open trench construction.
“Even though you pass by these culverts every day, it’s easy to forget the role they play in transferring water safely and efficiently,” continued Camano. “We appreciate everyone’s patience during the project and again, I don’t believe there will be significant impacts to traffic.”
The more than $300,000 project is being carried out by American West Construction, LLC, out of Denver.
