UPDATE: Brian McCleary has turned himself in to the Routt County Jail at 9:07 a.m. Friday morning, Oct. 25.

UPDATE at 12:30 p.m. Here is the picture of the man that the Routt County Sheriff’s Office is looking for. 46-year-old Brian McCleary was allegedly involved in an altercation late Wednesday night that resulted in a Shelter in Place order near RCR 14 and 14B. BE ON THE LOOKOUT
On 10/23/2024, Routt County Sheriff Deputies conducted a traffic stop near Routt County Road 14 and 14B. During the stop a Routt County K9 handler indicated a positive alert on the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle was identified as 46-year-old Brian McCleary and was the sole occupant.
McCleary fled the scene and other Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle. McCleary rammed two Routt County Sheriff vehicles and a Deputy attempted to disable the vehicle by shooting at a tire. McCleary proceeded to flee the scene on foot.
No Routt County Sheriff’s Deputies were injured during the incident.
Additional deputies responded to the scene along with law enforcement officers from the Steamboat Springs Police Department, the Hayden Police Department, and the Colorado State Patrol.
A perimeter was established around the area and an extensive search for McCleary ensued.
The 14th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team was activated to assist in the investigation. At this time McCleary has not been located. Please contact the Routt County Sheriff Office 970-879-1090 if you know of McCleary’s whereabouts.
Brian McCleary is described as 5’10” and 220 pounds, white male, with blue eyes and short brown hair. The Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the affected areas for their cooperation with sheltering in place and the communities assistance with this ongoing investigation.
All Suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Update at 9:24 a.m. A press release is forthcoming, according to Routt County Sheriff Doug Scherar.
Update at 9:10 a.m. We have called Routt County Dispatch at 5;55 a.m. and 9:04 a.m. for more information.
2:27 a.m. The Shelter in Place order was lifted.
10:48 p.m. The director of Routt County Dispatch has provided some information. The incident started with a traffic stop. The man allegedly involved allegedly tried to ram a police vehicle with his vehicle, which he then abandoned and ran. The entire combined emergency response team and SWAT team is at the scene, going house-to-house, and barn-to-barn, looking for the suspect. They do not know if weapons are involved. To err on the side of caution, the Shelter in Place order was issued. Those who received the warning will be notified when it is lifted.

9:41 p.m. The Shelter in Place order has been issued for near County Road 14 and County Road 14B.

9:35 p.m. Routt County Emergency Services has issued a Shelter in Place Order. “Law enforcement is requesting a Shelter in Place for a police action. You will be notified when all is clear.” There is no information in the order about location in Routt County.
9:29 p.m. Dispatch is working on sending a Reverse 911 right now. Avoid the scene if you are anywhere near the area. That’s all we have.
9: 20 p.m. We have received reports of multiple law enforcement vehicles headed down 131 to South Routt. Colorado State Patrol says it is an agency assist to the Routt County Sheriff’s Office on RCR 14B. We are working on getting information and will update as it becomes available.
