UPDATE: Brian McCleary has turned himself in to the Routt County Jail at 9:07 a.m. Friday morning, Oct. 25.
UPDATE from the Routt County Sheriff’s Office at 11 a.m. October 25, 2024 — On 10/25/2024, Brian McCleary surrendered himself in to the Routt County Sheriff Office. The Routt County Sheriff’s Office would like to thank the community for their assistance during this investigation and the Steamboat Springs Police Department, the Hayden Police Department, the Colorado State Patrol, the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office, the Craig Police Department and the 14th Judicial District Critical Incident Team. We appreciate everyone’s efforts in helping us protect our first responders and our citizens. All Suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
A list of potential offenses in the arrest record include:
- Speeding (5-9 over)
- Possession with intent to distribute manufacture cocaine
- 2nd Degree Assault/Peace officer or fireman
- 2nd Degree Assault/Peace officer or fireman
- Vehicular Eluding
- Reckless Driving
The Routt County Sheriff’s Office is looking for 46-year-old Brian McCleary. He was allegedly involved in an altercation late Wednesday night that resulted in a Shelter in Place order near RCR 14 and 14B. That’s the road to Stagecoach from US Hwy40.
The Sheriff’s Office says it started with a traffic stop when a Routt County K9 handler indicated a positive alert on the vehicle. McCleary was the only one in the car and fled the scene. The Sheriff’s Office says when they tried to stop the vehicle, McCleary rammed two of the Routt County Sheriff’s vehicles. A deputy tried to disable the vehicle by shooting at a tire, but McCleary fled on foot. No deputies were injured.
Additional law enforcement came to the scene to help including Steamboat Springs Police, Hayden Police, and Colorado State Patrol. The 14th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team was also activated.
There was an extensive search, and a Shelter In Place order was given through Routt County Dispatch around 9:30 p.m. It was canceled at 2:27 a.m. Thursday.

McCleary has still not been located. He is described as a white male with blue eyes and short brown hair who is 5’10” and 220 pounds.

BE ON THE LOOKOUT
On 10/23/2024, Routt County Sheriff Deputies conducted a traffic stop near Routt County Road 14 and 14B. During the stop a Routt County K9 handler indicated a positive alert on the vehicle.
The driver of the vehicle was identified as 46-year-old Brian McCleary and was the sole occupant.
McCleary fled the scene and other Deputies attempted to stop the vehicle. McCleary rammed two Routt County Sheriff vehicles and a Deputy attempted to disable the vehicle by shooting at a tire. McCleary proceeded to flee the scene on foot.
No Routt County Sheriff’s Deputies were injured during the incident.
Additional deputies responded to the scene along with law enforcement officers from the Steamboat Springs Police Department, the Hayden Police Department, and the Colorado State Patrol.
A perimeter was established around the area and an extensive search for McCleary ensued. The 14th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team was activated to assist in the investigation.
