Veterans were honored and recognized at assemblies and concerts throughout the country and here in Northwest Colorado Monday. The first stop for Routt County Veterans was Strawberry Park Elementary.

Here’s veteran Jim Stanko.

“Veterans is very, very important because it recognizes the service that all of us have given to this country, no matter whether you were in combat, or just in the service. You took time out of your lives so that other people could enjoy the freedoms that they enjoy now and that’s very important to me.”

In the afternoon, 5th graders at Soda Creek Elementary put on a performance honoring local veterans.

Here is Chase Demos.

“Why I like this program is because we get to thank all of our veterans for their great service.”

There were two programs in Hayden on Monday, hosted by the local FFA chapter.

Veteran Charlie Epp was at the evening presentation, which had a delicious dinner from the FFA kids.

“The FFA program for the veterans in Hayden is remarkable what they do to make us feel special, for our service and for our country. Every year they do a great job at doing it.”

“It’s been a pleasure working for the City of Craig for 26 years and I’m looking forward to retirement.”

Liz White is the City Clerk and Human Resources Director. She’s at every City Council meeting, and sets up the agendas and distributes them. We asked her what she’ll miss the most.

“The people that I work with. But I won’t miss the long nights and the long days, but I will miss the people that I work with.

White plans to stay in Craig for the summers but spend winters in Arizona.

Elkins Meadows in Steamboat Springs is doing some wildfire mitigation in the Elkins Meadows Open Space sometime in the next couple of weeks. Slash piles will be burned when the weather permits, specifically when snow is falling, so you will see some smoke.

Statement from Lost Ranger Wildlife Mitigation Services:

As a part of Elkins Meadow’s forest health and wildfire mitigation project work, burn piles were constructed in the Elkins Meadows Open Space. The piles are the result of an effort to reduce wildfire risk, and to promote species and age class diversity within the shared forested area, as well as to manage the significant amount of ground fuel build-up on the steep northwest facing slopes.

All appropriate permits have been applied for and approved by the City and the County. Ignitions will begin when the required weather conditions are relevant. In an effort to reduce potential disturbance, burning will be prioritized when snow is actively falling.
