Skier Assault Suspect Sought by Steamboat Springs Police

Witnesses Asked to Come Forward & Contact Detective Buccino

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-January 8, 2025-On Saturday afternoon, January 4, 2025, the Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation Security team called Steamboat Springs Police Department (SSPD) officers to the ski resort after a Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club (SSWSC) coach reported being assaulted on the mountain.

The victim reported that a skier had verbally confronted him while coaching a group of young athletes because of where he was standing in relation to a terrain feature. The coach attempted to calm the situation and eventually tried to leave the area to avoid further confrontation.

The man followed the coach down the trail and eventually caught up, grabbed the coach, and punched the coach in the head multiple times. The coach was able to take a photo of the suspect and a student filmed the assault. The victim sustained possible serious injuries, which may elevate the criminal charges.

On Saturday evening, SSPD posted a photo to social media to identify the suspect and received multiple tips. These tips were used to conjunction with other information, including video surveillance and lift ticket scans. SSPD Special Assignment Unit detectives developed probable cause to arrest the suspect, who remains outstanding.

SSPD asks witnesses to come forward and contact Detective Michael Buccino or another police officer (970-879-4344 or 970-879-1144) concerning this case, P2500219.

Operation Red Alert is underway in Steamboat Springs. The police department is focusing on those who run red lights. Special Assignment Unit detectives will make an increased effort to look for red light offenders for the next six weeks. They’ll use marked and unmarked patrol vehicles. If a vehicle enters an intersection at any time AFTER the signal light has turned red, it’s a violation. The penalty is a $120 fine and four points on your license.
