The 50th Annual Bud Light Cowboy Downhill was a frigid affair Monday, with the heartiest of souls here from across the United States, and also Canada and Australia. Over 60 cowboys and cowgirls from the National Western Stock Show still competed with a long list of cowboy legends and friends, and some brave Denver Bronco cheerleaders. They first competed in the slalom, where they negotiated gates and a big jump, and then lassoed a person, saddled a horse and zipped across the finish line.
A hometown favorite was the winner… Steer Wrestler Jace Logan from Yampa who now lives in Meeker.
“I came in here and thought that I just want to have some fun and then I got a little competitive and thought if everybody else goes then I better turn it loose and try to win.”
And Jace Logan did win in 27.24 seconds.
Slalom winner for the women was AriAnna Flynn from Arkansas.
Then they all lined up at the top of the Stampede run for the all-out race to the finish. Saddle bronc rider Brody Wells from Powell, Wyoming, made it across the finish line first, and in one piece.
“My strategy was don’t worry about anybody else and just go fast.”
The best wreck went to Dalton Williams, a bareback rider from Loveland. As he sprinted across the finish line, he did a spread-eagle somersault and landed in the ropes.
