You could see smoke today on some slash piles near Thorpe Mountain Drive in Oak Creek. The Oak Creek Fire Protection District is doing a prescribed/controlled burn on the Past Time Timbers Ranch. Smoke will be visible from Hwy 131 and County Road 14 in Steamboat Springs, Oak Creek, Phippsburg, and Yampa. Prescribed pile burns are low-intensity, prescribed fires, ignited by trained personnel to remove excess fuels, such as vegetation and dead wood, which would enable wildfires to burn hotter and longer.
We recently reported on the number of traffic deaths on Colorado roads last year. There were 684, with the most in July, September, and October. Colorado State Patrol also sent out a list of the top five counties where residents received speeding citations by Colorado State Patrol Troopers. Local counties did not make that top list, but we did ask what the numbers were here locally.
In 2024, here are the numbers of speeding citations issued by Colorado State Patrol.
- Routt County speeding citations issued 557
- Grand County speeding citations issued 493
- Moffat County speeding citations issued 185
- Rio Blanco County speeding citations issued 82
- Jackson County speeding citations issued 10

Yield to the bus. The City of Steamboat Springs is reminding drivers to watch for the city buses, especially when that bus is re-entering from a bus stop. There is a Yield to Bus signal that lights up, and it is actually a law. Please let that bus re-enter traffic.
