A skier died in an avalanche on Berthoud Pass Saturday afternoon. Another avalanche was triggered earlier Saturday, also in Grand County, near Grand Lake. This was triggered by a snowmobile operator. Several people were caught but no one was hurt. Conditions are moderate in the Steamboat Springs area today. If you are going into the backcountry, carry the right equipment and always check conditions with the Colorado Avalanche Information Center.
Funeral services for Pete Van De Carr are scheduled for 3 p.m. this Thursday, Feb. 27, at Howelsen Ice Arena. The longtime local businessman and owner of Backdoor Sports died skiing at Steamboat Resort last week.
The upper Knoll Parking Lot at Steamboat Ski Resort is closed today through March 7. The lower Knoll Parking lot closes tomorrow. This is to get the parking lots ready for WinterWonderGrass, which starts this Friday, Feb. 28-March 2. Parking is still available from the Meadows Lot, starting at 6 a.m. every day that the Upper Knoll Lot is closed. And there is no overnight parking.
Routt County 4-H is hosting an Open House this afternoon, to learn more about 4-H Shooting Sports projects. The project covers firearm safety and teaches responsible handling and use, taught by a certified 4-H shooting sports instructor. The 4-H Open House is from 3:30-5:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 24, in the Routt County Community Room at 6th and Oak.
The Moffat County Board of County Commissioners is meeting tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. Commissioners plan to proclaim it Greater Sandhill Crane Week.
The Routt County Board of County Commissioners also meets Tuesday morning. One agenda item is the appointment of Melina Bricker to the Oak Creek Cemetery Board of Directors. Pete Wither will present from the Routt County Museums and Heritage Fund Advisory Board on budget approvals for different historical groups in Routt County.

In sports news, Olympic medalist and Steamboat Springs High School graduate Jaelin Kauf has won more mogul competitions and is now at the top of the overall World Cup mogul standings. Kauf graduated from SSHS in 2014.

Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club athletes had 11 podium finishes at the recent Rocky Mountain Nordic Division races in Crested Butte. It was a qualifier for the 2025 U.S. Cross Country Junior National Championships. Sixteen SSWSC Cross Country ski athletes qualified for Junior Nationals at Soldier Hollow Nordic Center in Utah, March 6-15.
