Someone put 17 For Sale signs up on the information sign in the Dry Lake Trailhead parking lot at Buffalo Pass Saturday morning. One large sign said, “Keep Public Lands Public. Call your representatives. Your voice matters.” Each sign had a phone number on it of people like Senators Hickenlooper and Bennet, Representative Neguse, and Governor Polis. Witnesses said U.S. Forest Service staff was there and saw the signs, which were gone by noon.

Another sign was put up on Rabbit Ears Pass on Hwy 40, overlooking the Yampa Valley, as part of the National Park protest that happened across the country. The person who sent it said it is to “show our support for those that were affected by the mass firings, that make our Parks and Forests unsafe and vulnerable. With the loss of 20 USFS staff at the Steamboat Springs office, we the people of Routt County, from both political parties, stand with our federal workforce.” The person who sent the picture asked to remain anonymous.
There’s new graffiti spotted on the Core Trail, near the library, and up on a wall overlooking town at CMC. Steamboat Springs Police says they’ve been seeing it a lot more. If you know who may be doing it, reach out to the local police. 970-879-1144.
The Yampa Valley Balloon Rodeo won’t be happening this summer.
“And it’s sad. Both Scott Flower and I are devastated.”
That’s Karen Beauvais. She and Scott Flower have organized the balloon rodeo for the past two years after the previous owner/organizer of the Steamboat Balloon Rodeo decided not to host it any more. They say they won’t be doing it this summer for a couple of reasons.
“The land that we used to be able to launch, I want to say for the last 15 years, is just no longer available to us. Then you couple that with how popular Steamboat has become in the summertime, with so many people coming to visit in the summer, and lodging became more and more difficult.”
Beauvais says the pilots have always been given rooms for lodging, and that the Balloon Rodeo is “on hold,” in case someone else steps up to organize it. The Balloon Rodeo has been happening in Steamboat Springs since 1981.
Here’s more from Karen Beauvais.
