By Shannon Lukens.
Expect some traffic delays on U.S. Highway 40 near the Downhill Drive intersection, as of today. In June, a good part of the work will be done at night.
A traffic signal is being installed. There will be a more gradual entry from Downhill Drive onto Hwy 40, with work done on a sewer extension, storm sewer improvements and a water main line connection. The sidewalk will be extended on the west side of Downhill Drive. Crosswalks will be added.
Vehicles will be reduced to a single lane of alternating traffic during the project. Daytime work hours are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Night work begins in June.
Business and resident access will stay open. When grading and reconstruction is done, Downhill Drive will have to be closed.
Work should be finished in fall of 2025

CDOT begins US 40, Downhill Drive intersection improvement project in Steamboat Springs
Drivers to expect increased travel times
Routt County — The Colorado Department of Transportation and contract partner United Companies began the US Highway 40 and Downhill Drive intersection improvement project Monday, April 7. Minimal impacts are expected as the project mobilizes equipment and begins erosion control measures and surveying.
Project Benefits
This is an intersection improvement project at US 40 and Downhill Drive on the west end of Steamboat Springs. The work includes aligning Riverside Drive and Downhill Drive to make a more gradual entry from Downhill Drive onto US 40. Utility work includes a sanitary sewer extension across US 40, storm sewer improvements and a water main line connection. All utility, striping work and installing traffic signal poles and mast arms on US 40 is being scheduled at night.
An extension of the sidewalk on the west side of Downhill Drive will tie into the existing sidewalk to the north of US 40. There will be added crosswalks for improved pedestrian safety with the addition of the signal, and additional bus stops on the north and south side of US 40.
