The Routt County Wildfire Mitigation Council held their spring conference this week. Speakers and experts from around the state spoke about how wildfires are not a matter of if, but when, and then how we will be affected. Here’s Steamboat Springs Fire Chief Chuck Cerasoli.
“Gatherings like this are important for our community so that we all can identify our roles in wildfire preparedness, recovery, and resiliency.”
The formation of a Long-Term Recovery group with experts, community members, and elected officials was discussed.
Western Slope lawmakers have sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, saying how disappointed they are with the recent staffing cuts made at the United States Forest Service. The lawmakers emphasized the importance of recreation, wildfire prevention, water, and wildlife in Colorado, and how important a strong Forest Service workforce is to the state. Renovations begin in July for the Steamboat Springs Tennis Center. One of the biggest improvements is that the entire exterior membrane will be replaced. The building will be painted and new indoor lighting will be added. The cost is about $2M+ and 75 percent of the money has been raised by the Steamboat Tennis & Pickleball Complex through the Courting Love campaign.

This week has been called the “Final Showdown” at Steamboat Resort. This is the last weekend of the season. On Saturday afternoon, those skiers and riders who took turns on the mountain every single day this season, will receive a belt buckle. The slopes close on Sunday.
Also Sunday, there is a special run at 10 a.m. in the Lil’ Rodeo terrain park. It’s in memory of Jesse Hamric, who died last summer. The Class of 2024 SSHS graduate was a competitive snowboarder. All are invited to take a run for Jesse.
Join available Steamboat Springs City Councilors for Coffee with Council starting at 8 a.m. this morning in the Paachihpi Community Room in the new City Hall. There are no presentations. It is just whatever is on your mind, to discuss current issues and topics.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is hosting an Easter display at Centennial Mall in Craig. It’s from 5-8 p.m. Friday, April 18, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 19. Local musicians will be there performing tonight on the Yampitheater Playhouse Stage in the mall. The 13th Annual Easter Egg Hunt presented by New Creation Church in Craig is Saturday morning, April 19. This is a free event but children up to 5th grade need to be registered to participate. Go to NCCCraig.com to pre-register. The event opens at 9 a.m. and the egg hunt begins at 11 a.m. There will also be bounce houses, a petting zoo and more activities and food trucks. AND, 25,000 eggs!
The town of Oak Creek is having an Easter Egg Hunt in Decker Park starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 19. There will be live music and the Easter Bunny will be there.
Enjoy Coffee with the Mayor of Yampa, at 10 a.m. Saturday at Crossan’s Market/Town Hall at 101 Main Street.
Give Sled Hockey a try at Howelsen Ice Arena. It’s free, from 4-6 p.m. Saturday, April 19. Sled hockey allows those with physical disabilities to participate in ice hockey by using specially designed sleds and two sticks. It makes hockey inclusive and accessible. The event is a collaborative effort by Northwest Colorado Center for Independence (NWCCI), Rocky Mountain Health Plans, Harmonie House, City of Steamboat Springs and STARS.
Saturday night is prom for students at SoRoCo High School followed by After Prom in the High School Commons.
