CDOT Intersection Project Closes Downhill Drive Next Week
Road Closure Anticipated To Span Four Months
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-May 2, 2025-The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) intersection improvement project at US40 and Downhill Drive will bring significant changes starting Monday, May 5, for motorists and businesses in the area.
On Monday, Downhill Drive will be closed from US40 to approximately 350 ft north of US40, for an anticipated four months; with the $7.5-million-dollar project expected to end of October. Crews will undertake relocating a gas line, clearing and grubbing activities as well as the removal of the existing asphalt.
Detours will be put in place by CDOT to access surrounding businesses during the closure. There will also be a temporary access for NAPA off of US40.
For the next two weeks, continuation of the waterline construction on Riverside Drive will be ongoing. In addition, plans call for vehicles to be reduced to a single-lane, alternating traffic intermittently in either direction, throughout the duration of the project on US40 and Riverside Drive.
Night work starting in early June will be performed for utility, striping and installation of traffic signal poles and mast arms. Night work will occur during the hours of 7:30 PM-5:30 AM Sunday-Thursday for all operations on US40.
The Steamboat Springs Transit stop at Riverside Drive and westbound Downhill Drive has been closed due to construction and temporary stop is served at the entrance to Whitehaven Mobile Home Park. In addition, a temporary stop is at the corner of US40 and County Shop Road will be established when the Downhill Drive stop is closed.
The US40 & Downhill Drive Intersection is a high priority for improvement. Designed by Baseline Engineering, the planned intersection improvements include aligning Downhill Drive and Riverside Drive, installation of traffic signals, planning for future 4-lanes on US40, and improving pedestrian, bicycle, and transit service to the intersection.
