The Summit County School District has been bringing buses to D&D Metal Recycle to be crushed and turned to scrap. It is part of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean School Bus Incentive program. Diesel bus engines are being replaced with electric motors.

Emily Duksa with D&D Metal Recycle says the Steamboat Springs School District brought buses a year ago to have D&D scrap their diesel fleet. Duksa says it requires shearing the frame rails and crushing the motors to qualify for the grant.

“We have to cut the chassis. We have to drill a hole into the motor so that they can never be re-used again. And then 100% of this bus will be recycled, which is a really cool thing.”

The EPA website says the EPA anticipates awarding up to $965 million to fund new, zero-emission and clean school buses through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

“And we just decided that it was time for us to get into the river game. This year, we wanted to add a river race series to be able to get all of those fun rafters and everybody else that loves to be on the river all year round. And try to add another event to their repertoire for the year.”

Tonight is the Yampa River Sprint. It’s a time trial starting at the 5th Street Bridge and ending at the D-Hole next to West Lincoln Park. There are four divisions: Whitewater and Inflatable Kayaks, Stand-Up paddleboards, and rafts. There will be racing on the next three Wednesdays.

A shuttle will help get racers up and down the river. Visit TownChallenge.com to register.
