Here’s the weekly update on the projects on Downhill Drive and Riverside Drive.
Crews will NOT be working starting at 1 p.m. Friday, through Tuesday, May 27, over the Memorial Day weekend. The closure on Downhill Drive is expected to last four months. Traffic will be reduced to a single lane and alternating. Night work in the area begins in July for all work on Hwy 40.

Weekly Update
May 19-23, 2025
Motorists Should Plan For:
- Crews will not be working beginning 1 p.m., Friday, May 23 – Tuesday, May 27, in recognition of the Memorial Day weekend. Crews will return to the worksite the morning of Wednesday, May 28.
- The Downhill Drive closure for the reconstruction of the roadway will be in place for approximately four months. All businesses on Downhill Drive will remain open. NAPA can be accessed via the temporary access driveway off of US 40. Yampa Valley Tire Pros and other businesses can be accessed via Radiator Road and a southbound turn onto Downhill Drive where flaggers will assist drivers into the work zone. See detour map below.
- On Downhill Drive, excavation work will be ongoing and Comcast will be performing relocation work there as well.
- Work on US 40 will consist of storm line crossing and waterline tie-in. Additional work on US 40 will include demolition of the existing sidewalk on the southeast side of Riverside Drive.
- All work is weather dependent.
- Vehicles will be reduced to a single-lane, alternating traffic intermittently in either direction, throughout the duration of the project on US 40, Riverside Drive
and Downhill Drive.
Traffic Impacts
- The speed limit will be reduced to 35 mph through the work zone. 12 foot width and 90 foot length restrictions are in effect.
- Night work starting in July will be performed for utility, striping and installation of traffic signal poles and mast arms. Night work will occur during the hours of 7:30 PM-5:30 AM Sunday-Thursday for all operations on US 40.
- Business and resident access will remain open throughout the duration of construction with the potential for intermittent closures.
- There will be a full closure of Downhill Drive during the grading and reconstruction phase of the project.
- The transit stop at Riverside Drive and westbound Downhill Drive will be removed and relocated during construction. Please visit the Steamboat Springs transit page for details on route changes: https://www.steamboatsprings.net/166/Transit
