Colorado Parks and Wildlife has confirmed the death of male gray wolf 2507 in northwest Colorado, north of Hayden. The agency received a mortality alert on May 31 and says the cause of death is still under investigation. As a federally protected species, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is also involved in the investigation. CPW continues to monitor four potential dens and believes new pups were likely born this year as part of ongoing efforts to build a sustainable wolf population in the state.
A woman was seriously injured after being attacked by a cow moose at River Creek Park in Steamboat Springs on Sunday. According to Colorado Parks and Wildlife, the woman was walking her two dogs when the moose charged; a paddleboarder helped her to safety before the animal returned and kicked her. She was flown to a Front Range hospital after being treated at the scene. CPW officers later located the moose and her two calves and have temporarily closed the park through Tuesday. Officials remind the public that moose can be especially aggressive during calving season and urge caution when recreating in areas with dense vegetation.
