Close to 3,000 Routt County residents were without power early Tuesday, and our stations were off the air for a few hours. It started around 12:45 a.m. when a raccoon got into the Airport Substation across from Bob Adams Airport, affecting power from the Steamboat Springs Community Center to Milner. Linemen, a dispatcher, and an engineering team from Yampa Valley Electric worked to get the last power turned on by 5 a.m. They had to then make some repairs to the substation.

Different groups and agencies in Routt County have put together a list of where residents can get free food, or food at a low cost. It includes places like the LiftUp Food Bank in Steamboat Springs and Oak Creek. There’s a Food Blessing Box in front of the Heart of Steamboat United Methodist Church and the Hayden Congregational Church. You can take food or donate food. A full list of low-cost or free food options is on our website.

VFW Post 4265 in Craig is hosting an American flag retirement ceremony with the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office on Saturday. Flags have been collected. VFW Commander Tara Garber says they’ll take more flags and people are welcome to watch the ceremony.

“Only American flags get respectfully retired and honored by the VFW. The community is welcome to bring chairs because we’ve got probably over 300 flags already to retire.”

The flags will be burned completely, and the ash buried afterwards.

Flags can still be dropped off in the red box under the VFW flag at 419 E. Victory Way.

The flag retirement ceremony starts at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Moffat County Safety Center which is at 800 W. 1st Street in Craig.
