One person died in a helicopter crash northeast of Meeker. It went down late Wednesday night, after leaving the Meeker Airport that morning. A search began when it didn’t return as expected. The pilot was the only one on board. He has been identified as 59-year-old Thomas Prenzlow of Meeker.

 

It is very busy today and through the weekend here in Northwest Colorado.

The biggest event is the SBT GRVL cycling event. The expo continues all day today on Yampa Street. There’s a toddler bike race today. Tonight is the Canyon Costume Hill Climb at Howelsen Hill. The main event Saturday starts:

  • Blue Route starts at 6:30 a.m. and is 99 miles with an elevation gain of 3,695’
  • Red Route starts at 7 a.m. and is 57 miles with an elevation gain of 3,940’
  • Green Route starts at 7:30 a.m. and is 36.5 miles with an elevation gain of 2,170’

Sunday is the elite race and the amateur and juniors event, starting in Hayden and traveling in a loop south of Hayden.

  • Elite Race starts at8:15 a.m. for the Pro/Open Men and 8:20 a.m. for the Pro Open/Women and is 117 miles with an elevation gain of 8,245’
  • Amateur and Junior Race starts at 7 a.m. and is 80 miles with an elevation gain of 5,568’

While Sunday’s race is happening, stop by Dry Creek Park for the Hayden Community Festival, which will have lots of vendors and food.

There is another group in town of 31 cyclists riding across the United States on the Journey of Hope. They were in Craig last night, and they are at Horizons in Steamboat Springs tonight. That’s at 405 Oak Creek, so feel free to stop by between 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Also today…

Routt County Humane Society is hosting a free vaccination clinic for your pets from 1-3 p.m. today at Mountain Valley Bank in Wildhorse Plaza. This is free for all pets in Northwest Colorado, from Walden to Craig and everywhere in between.

 

The Hayden Dodgeball Tournament is Friday and Saturday, June 27-28, in 3rd Street Park in Hayden. The kids tournament is Friday evening. The adult tournament is Saturday afternoon. Register by calling 970-276-0500.

 

There is a babysitter training course all day today with Routt County Public Health and the CSU Extension office. This class costs $50. Registration is available online, and the registration deadline is June 19 and space is limited. Lunch and snacks will be provided. Stagecoach State Park is hosting a Safety Paddle event. Bring your paddle vessel, whether it’s a paddleboard, canoe, kayak, or sailboat, to paddle around the cover and brush up on boating safety. It’s from 4-6 p.m. Friday, June 27, in Keystone Cove at Stagecoach. A QR Code to register is on the Community Calendar on our website.

Perry Mansfield presents Rebel Rhythms: Broadway’s Rock Revolution from Hair to Hamilton. The show is at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, June 27-28, at Julie Harris Theatre at Perry Mansfield, 40755 CR 36. Tickets are available online at Perry-Mansfield.org/events. Saturday…

Steamboat Soccer Club is hosting a FREE Community Soccer Fest. It’s from 11 am. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 28, at Dry Creek Park in Hayden. This is for families from across the Yampa Valley to have fun and play some soccer with lots of fun and games and music and food trucks. The first 300 kids get a FREE soccer ball, thanks to sponsor Steamboat Storage.

 

Drop off leftover paint for recycling, or pick up free paint at the Steamboat Springs PaintCare Event. Households can bring in most types of paint, stain, and varnish, in any amount. There are some limits to businesses bringing in oil-based paint.

  • PaintCare Will Accept: Unwanted house paint and primers (latex or oil-based); stains; deck and concrete sealers; and clear finishes (varnish and shellac). Paint must be in sealed, original containers with the original manufacturer label.
  • PaintCare CANNOT Accept: Leaking, unlabeled, or empty containers; aerosol coatings; drums or containers larger than five gallons; hazardous waste or other chemicals, such as paint thinner, solvents, motor oil, spackle, glue, adhesive, roofing tar, pesticides, or cleaning chemicals.

The 2nd Annual BBQ, Beers, and Bags Cornhole Tournament is Saturday morning, June 28, at the Steamboat Springs Community Center. All are invited for the double elimination tournament presented by the Routt County Council on Aging. The winner gets a Grand Prize of a Hot Air Balloon Ride. The Craig Pride Festival is from 2-5 p.m. Saturday, June 28. It’s at the Center of Craig, which is at 601 Yampa Ave. The theme is Queer in the Country! There is a Cowboys in the Club Afterparty from 6:30-10 a.m. for those 18 and older. This is the 5th year for the Craig Pride festival. Find out more at CraigPride.org

 

Spend an afternoon with the Paleo Crew at Colorado Northwestern Field Museum. The event is from 1:30-2:45 p.m. Saturday, June 28, at the Craig Chamber of Commerce Building at 775 Yampa Avenue in Craig. The event is free and all are invited.

Day with the CNCC Paleo Crew Event Schedule

  • 1:30 p.m. — Presentation by Dr. Logan King on what CNCC paleontology has been doing for the last few years and plans for the future.
  • 1:45 p.m. — Insights into Walter the hadrosaur by Emerald Bender. Emerald’s master’s degree focused on describing Walter.
  • 2:30 p.m. — Q & A about Walter with Emerald Bender.
  • 2:45 p.m. — ‘Ask a Paleontologist’ round table. Paleontology crews will answer questions about CNCC lab or field paleontology programs. They will share what they have been up to, their favorite dinosaur, favorite tool, or any other questions you have ever wanted to know!

 

 

The Little Snake River Museum Is hosting a Flea Market. It’s from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 28, at the museum in Savery, Wyoming. There will be leatherwork, crafts, antiques, jewelry, and food. Try Sled Hockey at Howelsen Ice Arena. It’s from 5:30-7 p.m. Saturday, June 28.

 

Movies on the Mountain starts this Saturday night in Steamboat Square at the base of Steamboat Resort. Bring a chair and enjoy this week’s movie under the stars. It’s all free and fun for the whole family.
