The Museum of Northwest Colorado in Craig has acquired new items from the family of famous mountain man, Jim Baker. Here is assistant director of the museum, Paul Knowles.
“The museum has recently acquired a fascinating collection of Jim Baker, the famous mountain man’s personal effects, as well as his son and grandson who were very well known bounty hunters, a lot of their personal effects as well.”
Knowles has done a video showing all of the items that are acquired. It includes pictures that have never been seen before, of Jim Baker, Kit Carson, and Chief Ouray, and more. There are also pictures of J.B. Thompson, who named the town of Hayden. Jim Baker’s son, William, was born in Fort Bridger in the 1850s. He was a bounty hunter. His handcuffs with the original key are also part of the collection given to the museum. His Bounty Hunter book is also part of the collection.
Knowles hopes to have the new items on display by early September, at the latest.
