The size of the One Ear Pack of wolves in Jackson County is four adults and at least six pups. That’s according to the rancher at the property, Adam VanValkenburg, who says he was told by the local Colorado Parks and Wildlife agents Wednesday.
“Being that there’s a potential pack of ten next to all of our cows and stuff, and especially up on the mountain that can be hard to get to, yes, it’s kind of nerve-wracking.”
VanValkenburg says they’ll continue with non-lethal mitigation, including range riders.
“Definitely going to get nervous later this fall and winter when they to to start teaching their pups how to kill. They kill stuff, and that’s going to be a lot of wolves on the landscape.”

VanValkenburg says the adults in the pack are two females from Oregon and the two original father-son wolves that were first in Jackson County. Those two wolves were involved with multiple livestock and dog depredations when they were a pack of eight (one breeding pair and six pups). They are wolf numbers 2101 and 2301, pictured above. Those Jackson County depredations were from December 2021 through June 2024.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife did confirm that there are at least six pups in the pack. And they released a video.
