The Grand County Sheriff sends word that there will be zero-tolerance for those who are excessively speeding, driving aggressively, and illegally passing on state and county roadways and highways in Grand County. This after Grand County had six fatalities in less than a week this month. One was just north of Kremmling on Hwy 40, and the other was just south of Kremmling on Hwy 9, where a family of five died.
The sheriff’s office says drivers can be arrested, vehicles could be impounded or towed, and fines and penalties can be increased.
The press release from Grand County Sheriff Brett Schroetlin says, “Don’t risk a life to save a minute.” Details are below.

GRAND COUNTY SHERIFF TO IMPLEMENT ZERO-TOLERANCE ENFORCEMENT AMIDST SURGE IN DANGEROUS DRIVING BEHAVIORS AND FATAL ACCIDENTS
“Don’t Risk a Life to Save a Minute”
GRAND COUNTY, CO- Following an extremely concerning increase in fatal traffic accidents and persistent issues with excessive speeding, aggressive driving and illegal passes on state and county roadways and highways, the Grand County Sheriff’s Office has announced a significant shift in its traffic enforcement strategy, moving to a zero-tolerance approach for dangerous driving behaviors and choices.
In recent weeks, Grand County has tragically experienced two fatal vehicle crashes, casting a somber light on the urgent need for enhanced road safety. These incidents underscore a disturbing trend observed across our county, where motorists are increasingly engaging in reckless and unlawful driving practices.
“The safety of our community is paramount, and the recent loss of life on our roads is unacceptable,” stated Grand County Sheriff Brett Schroetlin. “We have seen a blatant disregard for traffic laws, putting every driver, passenger, pedestrian, and cyclist at risk. This behavior will no longer be tolerated.”
Effective immediately, Deputies from the Grand County Sheriff’s Office will adopt a zero-tolerance stance towards violations such as:
- Excessive Speeding: Driving significantly over posted speed limits.
- Aggressive Driving: Including tailgating, weaving through traffic, and road rage incidents.
- Illegal Passes: Unsafe passing maneuvers, particularly in no-passing zones or on shoulders.
Consequences for these violations will be severe and immediate, including:
- Custodial Arrest: Drivers engaging in egregious or repeated dangerous driving behaviors may be subject to immediate arrest.
- Vehicle Impoundment/Towing: Vehicles involved in serious violations will be subject to towing and impoundment at the owner’s expense.
- Increased Fines and Penalties: Full application of all legal penalties, including significant fines and points on driving records.
The Sheriff’s Office is committed to ensuring that Grand County roads are safe for everyone. This enhanced enforcement is not merely about issuing citations; it is about saving lives and deterring behaviors that have already led to tragic outcomes.
“We understand that this approach may lead to more interactions between law enforcement and drivers, but the current situation demands decisive action,” Sheriff Schroetlin added. “Our Deputies will be highly visible and proactive. We urge all motorists to take personal responsibility for their driving habits and prioritize safety above all else.”
General Traffic Safety Tips for All Motorists
The Grand County Sheriff’s Office reminds all drivers of fundamental safety practices:
- Obey Speed Limits: Adhere to posted speed limits and adjust speed for road, weather, and traffic conditions.
- Eliminate Distractions: Put away cell phones, avoid eating, and focus entirely on driving.
- Buckle Up: Ensure all occupants are properly restrained with seatbelts, every trip, every time. Children must be in appropriate car seats.
- Drive Sober: Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Plan for a sober ride.
- Maintain Safe Following Distance: Allow at least 3-4 seconds between your vehicle and the one in front of you. Increase this distance in adverse conditions.
- Be Patient and Courteous: Avoid aggressive behaviors, allow others to merge, and use turn signals.
- Watch for Pedestrians and Cyclists: Be especially vigilant in residential areas, near schools, and at intersections.
- Check Your Vehicle: Ensure tires are properly inflated, lights are working, and brakes are in good condition.
The Grand County Sheriff’s Office thanks the community for its understanding and cooperation as we work together to make our roads safer. We encourage citizens to report dangerous driving by calling 911 in emergencies or the non-emergency line at 970-725-3311.
