Those running for Steamboat Springs City Council in November have been announced. They are:

 

  • District 1 — Kelly Phillips and Gail Garey 
  • District 2 — Steve Muntean, running unopposed 
  • District 3 — David Box and John Agosta 
  • At Large is Walter Magill, Robbie Shine, Kim Haggarty, Loryn Duke, Joella West, Dave Barnes and Blythe Casner (she is curing her petition)

 

Petitions are still being finalized for those running for Craig City Council.

Yampa Valley Housing Authority is receiving $73,000 from a statewide Human-Bear Conflict Reduction Community Grant. It will be used on two trash and recycling enclosures at an apartment complex and a mobile home park in Steamboat Springs to fortify areas of highest bear conflict there. Close to $1 million in grant money was awarded statewide.

The campaign to circulate petitions to end Colorado’s Wolf Reintroduction Program by the end of the year has been put on pause by the Colorado Advocates for Smart Wolf Policy. A press release from the group says they hope the Colorado Legislature and federal policymakers can stop more wolf importation into Colorado, get CPW to responsibly manage the existing wolf population, and work on federal delisting. If it doesn’t happen, they say the initiative will return, “stronger than ever.”

Alpine Bank invites everyone to a Community BBQ tonight, on the front lawn of Steamboat Springs High School, rain or shine. It’s from 5-7 p.m. and it’s free. Those being honored are local law enforcement, educators, first responders, and the fire department.

 

Drop off unused paint for recycling from 2-6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, at MJK Ace Sales & Feed on 1st Street in Craig. This includes paint, stain, and varnish. And if you need leftover paint, you can pick some up. The PaintCare event is open to all Colorado households and businesses.

  • PaintCare Will Accept: Unwanted house paint and primers (latex or oil-based); stains; deck and concrete sealers; and clear finishes (varnish and shellac). Paint must be in sealed, original containers with the original manufacturer label.
  • PaintCare CANNOT Accept: Leaking, unlabeled, or empty containers; aerosol coatings; drums or containers larger than five gallons; hazardous waste or other chemicals, such as paint thinner, solvents, motor oil, spackle, glue, adhesive, roofing tar, pesticides, or cleaning chemicals.

The Steamboat Tennis and Pickleball Complex has been named one of 45 winners across the United States in the U.S. Tennis Association’s annual Outstanding Facility Awards. It was announced Tuesday at the 2025 US Open in New York City.

The remodel of the tennis bubble in Steamboat Springs continues with a new exterior skin, installation and lighting. It should be finished in October or early November. This is the first time the tennis bubble has undergone a renovation since it opened in 1991.

 Also, this weekend is the Steamboat Open Pickleball Tournament with nearly 200 players competing across multiple divisions and age groups from across the state. This tournament is a Professional Pickleball Association national qualifier.

The Tread of Pioneers Museum is taking nominations for the annual Leckenby and Larson Awards, given to those who have enriched the quality of life in Routt County. The deadline is Sept. 15. All nominations should be emailed to cbannister@treadofpioneers.org

 

Mark Fischer has been appointed as the new board chair for the Steamboat Symphony Orchestra. He takes over for Lara Craig who served for five years.

 

Colorado Northwestern Community College has announced they have received new reality-based training mats to be used by the Park Ranger Law Enforcement Academy on the campus in Rangely. It’s a 17-week academy and the mats will be used with scenario-based training sessions. They were installed by Canyonlands Construction.

Today is a Community Fiesta at the Social Center in Craig, at 775 Yampa Avenue. Families are invited from 3-6 p.m. for live music, games, food, and crafts.

 

The Steamboat High School Mountain Bike Team won their division at the first race of the season Aug. 23 in the Colorado High School Cycling League. The Cloud City Challenge was in Leadville. Thirty-five riders from Steamboat Springs High School and Steamboat Mountain School competed with 367 total racers in the Yampa Division.
