The Steamboat Springs High School Cross Country team attended the Battle Mountain Husky Invitational over the weekend, for their season opener, at the Minturn Nordic Center.
The SSHS Varsity ladies finished 6th as a team with Ayla Oslowski, Emerald Weber, Lily Garey, Evie Fisher, Davis Brosterhous, Carson Dressendorfer and Gigi Lobeck racing on that squad.
The SSHS Varsity men finished 7th as a team with Gavin Hendricks leading the squad with a podium finish in 15th, then Bode Rhodes, Quentin Nance, Benji Langness, Jacob Gonzales, Dylan Gillespie and Sonny Hankes racing on that squad.
In the open races, freshman Mia Lippuner finished 5th and Jaxon Shaw came in 6th, which put them both on the podium for the Sailors.
Head Coach Lisa Renee Tumminello writes, “It was a tough mountain course to challenge the lungs and legs and was an amazing and gritty racing day for our athletes. We were so impressed with the encouragement from veterans to our many new athletes, the athletes’ courage at the starting line, determination on the race course, and gratitude at the finish line. What a fantastic way to start to what will be an incredible season for our team!”
This weekend, the Steamboat Sailors travel to the Siena Valley Club for the Eagle Valley Invitational. This is also the course for the regional championships in October.
