The City of Steamboat Springs is reminding residents and visitors about parking correctly on parts of Yampa Street. The angled parking spaces are for back-in parking. It’s for the safety of cyclists and pedestrians, and those in vehicles on Yampa. Back-in parking allows drivers to pull out into traffic with a clear view of cyclists and oncoming cars, instead of backing out blindly into a busy travel lane.

Press Release from the City of Steamboat Springs; September 12, 2025.

Reverse Psychology: Back-In Parking Makes Sense

Change Your Angle on Yampa Street: Back-In Parking for Safety

Steamboat Springs, Colorado–September 12, 2025-The City of Steamboat Springs is reminding residents and visitors about the proper use of the back-in, angle parking spaces on portions of Yampa Street.

“Back-in parking provides a safer and more predictable environment for everyone on Yampa Street,” said Public Works Director Jon Snyder. “It allows drivers to pull out into traffic with a clear view of cyclists and oncoming cars, instead of backing blindly into a busy travel lane.”

Back-in, angle parking is required in this corridor for one important reason: safety. These spaces are adjacent to a bike lane, and pulling into traffic head-first makes it easier for drivers to see approaching cyclists, pedestrians, and vehicles.

By contrast, backing out of a head-in space would force drivers to reverse directly into the bike lane, creating a greater risk of collisions.

The city recognizes that back-in parking is found in a few select locations, however, it’s been in effect for several years. Ultimately, this parking method keeps both drivers and cyclists safe. To park correctly:

  1. Signal as you approach the spot.
  2. Pull forward past the space.
  3. Back slowly into the stall at an angle.

Drivers are asked to follow posted signs and pavement markings that designate these stalls as back-in only. Vehicles that do not comply with the requirement may be subject to a citation.

Additional information on parking, public parking lots and seasonal restrictions can be found online.
