Steamboat High School Mountain Bike Team Captures D1 State Championship Title
at Colorado High School Cycling League State Championships
Steamboat Springs, Colo – The Steamboat High School Mountain Bike Team captured the Colorado High School Cycling League Division 1 State Championship on Saturday, October 18, and Sunday, October 19, at the Spring Valley Scramble, hosted at Colorado Mountain College in Glenwood Springs. Freshman and Junior Varsity categories raced on Saturday, and Sophomore and Varsity categories raced on Sunday. A total of 906 riders from four regions raced in the State Championships, 29 from Steamboat. In addition to bringing home the first D1 title in the program’s history, the team also had five podium finishes (top 5) and 13 top 20 finishes.
The Spring Valley course offered a fitting finale to the season — a 5.6-mile loop with 653 feet of climbing per lap. The Steamboat team dominated the final races of the season, edging out Fairview and Golden to clinch the overall Division 1 state title. Every rider contributed, from Varsity leaders to Sophomore and Freshman standouts, showing the depth and strength of the SSWSC program.
The Steamboat Varsity girls had impressive and consistent races on all three laps with finishes that helped secure Steamboat’s team total. Whitney Warnke earned second place in Varsity Girls, teammate Allie Reznicek finished 19th, and Eva Minotto (Legacy) placed 22nd.
Steamboat’s Junior Varsity riders once again proved decisive. Quinn Dressen powered to second place in JV Boys, and Robbie Wodnik followed close behind in fifth. In the JV Girls field, Sydney Soard claimed fourth, and Lucia Magnotta and Lindsay Berke finished ninth and sixteenth, respectively. Jackson Rosencrantz also delivered a strong thirteenth-place finish, keeping Steamboat’s points flowing across all categories.
Steamboat’s deep Sophomore lineup also secured many strong finishes. Odin Gruben took second in Sophomore Boys, with Henry Davis and Fisher Beauregard finishing sixth and twelfth. Soren Shepherd and Ellis Dressendorfer added key depth to the Sophomore riders.
Samara Lambert continued her breakout Freshman season with a twelfth-place finish, and Andrew Melzer placed nineteenth among Freshman Boys; it was also his birthday. The strong showing of the Freshman and Sophomore Teams hints at a bright future for the Steamboat Team.
Riders also showed incredible grit in the face of adversity and finished their races despite the circumstances. Sophomore Julia Boness fought through an unfortunate mechanical, but powered through to finish the race. Freshman Fritz Gamber crashed twice and still managed to come back and finish in the top 30, in 27th place. Jackson Rosencrantz also crashed, and Jayden Hargis suffered a flat.
Beyond the racing, Steamboat’s team culture and energy stole the show. Steamboat earned the Team Spirit Award for their lively Disco theme, complete with bright costumes, music, a disco ball, a bubble machine, a dance floor, and a disco piñata. The infectious enthusiasm brought smiles to riders, coaches, and spectators alike.
“This group came together all season long,” said High School Team Head Coach Paul Majors. “They worked for each other—JV riders cheering Varsity, first-year students learning from seniors. That’s what makes this championship so meaningful.”
Cycling Program Director Evan Soard added, “It’s a very special team. Mountain biking is a tough sport, and while it is an individual sport, these kids all ride for the team. When one athlete falls, the other teammates pick each other up. With a strong group of young riders on the team, Steamboat will be a force in the coming years.”
With five races and five victories, Steamboat Springs concluded the 2025 season as Colorado League Division 1 State Champions, proving once again that the power of teamwork—and a little disco spirit—can light up any mountain.
